Oh, yes. Please. I have such glorious memories of winter walks in Canada. The snow squeaking underfoot (I love the way the pitch changes with temperature). The sky blazing blue, the shadows indigo against white. England is damp brown and grey and dull green, and smells of rotting leaves. I'd rather snow than snowdrops. Why am I living here?
I'll come, too!! I miss Maine. . . Lene, I've noticed that we've gained a whole hour of daylight in the afternoons, just since Christmas -- your days must be getting a little brighter, too.
Yes I do ! I love our Quebec winter, somewhat shorter than yours(more sun...) but as cold and snowy...It's still -24 this morning...Let's go for a long walk dear Lene ! Esther ps. your dog is so lovely...and I think it's the first time you put a picture of yourself ? Pleased to meet you more !
Oh, yes, I would join you too! I've been dreaming of moving to nothern Finland for a while now. Or the north of Canada. We never have a decent Winter here, no freezing, no snow. :(
Seems like your dog had a wonderfull time as well!
What a cute face your dog has! Happy "went-for-a-walk" face. And both you and your dog look fine (not frozen!!!) after such a walk!! Our dog, Emma, gets too cold out there. We have a whole wardrobe of coats for her! (and doggie boots!) Love your blog, and photos are beautiful. Cranberry-pudding-red almost made us cry, so sweet, and love the name "DancesWithWool". Love it!
I would love to join! Suiting up for the outdoors in the winter is one of my favorite things. I have hardly been able to use my outdoor gear this year. Though not sure my puppy could handle -25, he gets a bit woosy.
I would be delighted to join you and Tina for a stroll in the woods. Here in Montreal it is only-15 today. That means 3 layers of clothing instead of the 4 layers I wear when it is -25. This is the time of winter when I wear my Aran wool sweater, hat and mittens most often, they are so warm. When I knit them I followed my Mother's instructions to knit a little bit looser and then to full(not felt!) the wool. It makes the yarn thicker and the knitting tight enough to block the wind. A warm scarf for the face is always needed. I would like to knit a qiviut scarf or balaclava for next winter. Stay warm Lene!
Oliver (woof) and I would love to join you. North Idaho had 1+ of snow last night and it's -8 with wonderful sunshine this morning. We'll have to settle for that and a brisk walk this afternoon.
Yes, I'd love to come. It is wonderful to see your sweet faces! It is snowing here in southern Ohio, 22F (-5C). We have about half an inch of snow with only another half inch expected. Our winter was mild until a week ago and now is finally the way January is supposed to be. It is fun to be wearing my handknit sweater, socks, hat, mittens and scarf!
I love the frosted eyelashes! I don't know if I'd be up for a walk of that length in such cold, but I'd be up for a ride on the frozen lake! I've never been in temperatures that cold before!
It is so fun to read about somehwere that is different than where I live (Portland, Oregon). But, I think it is cold here at 35 degrees F so I'll pass on the walk in the COLD. Thank you for the invitation though!
So nice to put a face with the artist! I am a wuss, I stay indoors where it is warm but through your blog I do daydream of what your outings must be like so very far north.
I can see by the beautiful glow on your face that the sun is returning to your part of the world. How nice...that must cheer you and Tina. She is a beautiful dog! My dog LOVES the cold and snow!...we would love to go on your walk. Stay warm in your wool!
Honestly Lene, after several sleepless mosquito-ridden weeks of humid sweltering/searing heat of Sydney...yes! Except I would have to invest in serious anti-snow clothes. Is that Tina?
Yes, I'd love to join you and Tina for a 5K walk. I'd have to be really warmly dressed though. For some reason, this year I seem to be feeling the cold more--could it be old age coming on? And it's only a bit below 32F here. Lovely picture of your happy dog, and it's nice to see your face too.
Only -16*C today here in Ottawa,ON, but -21*C tomorrow. Skating on the canal has begun, and Winterlude (here http://www.canadascapital.gc.ca) begins on Friday! With your frosty eyelashes you and Tina will fit right in! Want to join us?
Actually, our temp is about the same right now (-6 F with the wind chill, maybe 10 F above without). I went to my LYS yesterday and wanted to buy lots of wool - settled on just enough for a pair of socks. Better a cold, sunny day than a cold, gray day!
Frost art is incredibly beautiful on the windows, and I'd admire it at great length if I'm wrapped in sufficient wool. My cows' whiskers were frosted this morning when I went to milk. Wouldn't I like to have a heated barn! I'd come on such a walk, but not before the chores are done. Love the squeaky snow!
When I came back from my run last night in -20 weather, I was wearing the same frosty "mascara". Some may think we're crazy to go out in such weather, but it's the only way to stay sane!
Look at al that auringonpaiste! I love getting all bundled up and taking a brisk walk on cold winter days while the sun is shinning so bright! Tina looks so very happy as well as you.
I wish I were there! here in Western New York we like to say there is a lot of snow, but it is gray and humid in winter. I miss -25 C and bright sun! From a Canadian moved south.
What a wonderful picture of you! And Tina looks like a iloinen terve koiro. (Hope I got that right)
I'd love to tramp in the crisp cold with you, then back to warm up with some pulla, coffee, and good conversation. There's nothing quite like a walk in very cold, dry air to make a person feel alive. Did you walk on the lake or through the woods?
I just read the Yarn Harlot's blog about her class in mittens of Rovaniemi, with Susanna Hansson - they're gorgeous. It looks very complicated and interesting.
I envy you the winter. We had some snow here in Southern Europe. Actually half a metre that descended one day and melt the other day so we're back knee deep in mud. Winter was probably cancelled this year. Sigh.
hello from Canada! this is my first time here. i linked to you from yarnharlot.ca so, pardon my "unknowing" but if you are in Finland why do you blog in English and why is your English flawless?.... and how do you pronounce Lene? you can reach me at: dreamvoyageur@yahoo.ca
What great pictures! I found your blog via Yarn Harlot, and I would love to make mittens like those someday. Strangely enough, I actually went to Rovaniemi about 10 years ago when I spent the summer in Jyvaskyla to work on a research project. I took the train up and checked out the Santa Claus place and stood on the Arctic Circle (yes, touristy, but still cool). Unfortunately, I was not knitting much at the time, or it would have been even more fantastic. I'd love to get back to Finland again for a visit - this time during winter! -Jenny
So, frost does make a nice mascara! ;-) I'd love to join you... Munich is way to warm (and wet) for my taste right now, we don't even have proper snow - right now, we have sleet.
Ok, so, I live in Michigan and we get some cold weather, but I am wondering what it feels like to have your eyelashes frosted over? It might not feel so good, but it sure looks cool! And your dog looks so cute and happy to have just gone on a LONG walk!
I shared your pictures with my three year old daughter. She started singing "Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes" from the song My Favorite Things. It was very sweet.
oh how cute. Your doggy picture is sooo funny. There is another gal that has a blog I read that posted a funny picture of her dog IN A SWEATER LOL I cracked up! I LOVE the snow. I hate that really bitter cold, but I adore snow and cold, it's snuggly and cozzy and I can wear my knits LOL.

ReplyDeleteNot sure I could handle the whole walk. I would have to get used to the cold a little before I could the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteBRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
I'll come, too!! I miss Maine. . . Lene, I've noticed that we've gained a whole hour of daylight in the afternoons, just since Christmas -- your days must be getting a little brighter, too.

ReplyDeleteNo thank you. Canada has got plenty enough of winter for me.
ReplyDeleteBut the pair of you look very cute.
I would be delighted to join you and Tina for a stroll in the woods. Here in Montreal it is only-15 today. That means 3 layers of clothing instead of the 4 layers I wear when it is -25.

Temp is -12˚F here, which is similar to your temp. Love the frozen eyelashes!

M.A. in N.E.
They make ice-pick tips for crutches. This is the first time I've wanted to get a pair and give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI want frozen eyelashes!!
It's so nice to see you smiling in the sunshine. It's like spring here. Where is our winter? We have no snowpack for our summer water.
ReplyDeleteI am up for it! I think I'd lag far behind the pup though.
ReplyDeletefrost on your eyelashes!!!
ReplyDeleteHonestly Lene, after several sleepless mosquito-ridden weeks of humid sweltering/searing heat of Sydney...yes!
ReplyDeleteExcept I would have to invest in serious anti-snow clothes.
Is that Tina?
I'd come just to share your company, but I'd have to borrow some of your lovely warm mittens!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'd love to join you and Tina for a 5K walk. I'd have to be really warmly dressed though. For some reason, this year I seem to be feeling the cold more--could it be old age coming on? ReplyDeleteKate, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
I would love to go for a long walk where you live. It looks amazing, cold but amazing.
ReplyDeleteBitter cold winter weather is a lot nicer in the woods than in the city! Winter is always so messy and slushy here in Toronto.
ReplyDeleteThat Tina has got a huge smile going!
Yes! Take me away from this lack of winter in Texas and give me snow! And Reindeer! And snowmobiles! And a fire every night! I miss the snow!
ReplyDeleteYou'd better believe it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos.
You bet. And afterwards, some steaming hot tea. I'll put the kettle on.
ReplyDeletei would go everywhere with a dog like yours...
ReplyDeletesabine
What kind of dog is Tina? She is a cutie!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteBundle up :)
I'd have to get me some winter clothes first. I don't own a coat or jacket. I have some sweaters but that's it.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed seeing the pictures of you and Tina.
I'll come! It's better than the inversion and bad air. Looks like you are both dressed for it!
ReplyDeleteWow, looks like a chilling walk! It was probably exhilarating and tiring at the same time. I bet everyone will be sleepy tonight!
ReplyDeletegosh it looks cold—but it is cold here too! at least now we have sun . . .
ReplyDeleteLook at al that auringonpaiste!

ReplyDeleteYes, I'd love to join you. Until global warming took over, temps were equally cold here in Wisconsin. I miss REAL winters.
ReplyDeleteI envy you the winter. We had some snow here in Southern Europe. Actually half a metre that descended one day and melt the other day so we're back knee deep in mud. Winter was probably cancelled this year. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness, yes! I'm in Albuquerque, NM, and I so miss real winters!
ReplyDeleteIs it just my imagination or is that the first-ever picture of you on the blog?

Sure, I'd love to join you two. We might have to get a sweater for Gypsy, though. That might be a bit too cold for her.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes and yes.
ReplyDeleteNever been there in winter. I love north Finland and it's beautiful landscape. Such a nice fishing places and people's :-)
ReplyDeleteBrrr, I am with you in spirit. Here in Wisconsin it is -4F now with wind--that means it is -20 C. Good bracing weather that inspires warm knitting.
