Today I will share with you bits of my Advent
calendar. Maybe you remember I mentioned December 1st that I have
one that is called Woman’s Strength Calendar. I was curious what would be in it.
I have enjoyed every day very much, as it has little notes and advice in it.
“If the cinnamon cookie dough is tasty, it really does not matter if the
edges of the cookies are little burnt.”
“Time sugarcoats Mom’s rutabaga casserole.”
(Rutabaga
casserole is traditional Finnish Christmas dish and it is very difficult to get
the right sweet taste combined with the texture. I am in quest for it and never
seem to reach it.)
“Christmas is a journey, not a destination.”
“Life is like building a ginger bread house: your fingers burn, the facade
crumbles, but the taste does not weaken.”
“If you undertake Christmas, you have to
bear the consequences.”
“Christmas does not come, if Mom does not blow up at least once.”
“Christmas peace means that also the dust mice may live.”
Then
there have been two more, but one is tied so tightly to Finnish proverbs and
the other one to Finnish habits that I am afraid, their meanings would be lost
in my explanation and translation.
Wool
with you,
Lene
PS. Yes, I do have a huge floor loom and have not been
weaving for a very long time. Occasionally I think about weaving skirt fabrics
(unrealistic!), like those in national costumes and then about rag rugs (more
realistic)… has not happened yet.
I am really enjoying your Christmas-season posts. Thank you. :-)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post! My Swedish grandmother always made rutabagas for Christmas, and my attempts to recreate hers are never the same. Sweet memories!
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone! My loom has not been warped since before my twins were born. 6.5 years ago. Oh well. Husband figures it can wait as long as it takes me to find time, moving it from the third floor is too much effort anyhow! I am loving your posts every day. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love the quote, "Christmas is a journey, not a destination." The calendar looks like it is fun.
ReplyDeleteFascinating pieces from your Advent Calendar! Thanks for sharing. You do, however, make me curious about those very Finnish bits of wisdom...are you sure they would be ruined by translation and explanation? :-)
