New season

The summer was so warm and so lovely, that I really thought it would go on forever... Cool, windy days and dark nights came almost like a shock and I was not prepared to them at all. Last night I looked out of the window at ten and could not believe that it was so dark so early... But really there is no denying, it feels like fall, the colors are changing and the light has already turned into soft tones of fall. And the dear lake keeps bringing up these cold blues from its hidden wells.

It is cool and I have started hankering for wool, as in wool yarn, patterns for using this wool yarn and wool clothing. I have already used wool gloves once, they were necessary one morning when I went for a walk. I have dug wool socks from their drawers, the floors feel so cold already and my old Shetland shawl keeps following me around the house. I have shopped my stash several times and have been searching for inspiration from Knitty, Twist Collective and several other new on-line sources. I have been through my stitch dictionaries and have started and ripped out at least a dozen projects. It is the beginning of the wool season (9 months long season!) and I am going to make the most of it. I will surround myself with all the good wools things this season brings!

I don't know where to start: mittens? sock? gloves? scarves? shawls? long johns? hats? sweaters? I want all!!

I will start off by making something small, something cheerful and happy... New mittens is probably the right way to go. I really would not be writing this if I had not already started... I am visiting my own old pattern. This feels like a good starting point.

I know most of you are not yet so far into the fall. In case you need comforting in the transition, now that I have already crossed the line and am in the fall, I can assure you that it does not look too bad in here. The new summer is already on its way, we just need to do some serious knitting first. And, my friends, it is not a bad thing.

(And those of you who are approaching summer at the moment, you lucky ones, enjoy your warm days!)

Wool with you,
Lene

  1. I luv the Autumn as it rejuvinates me!
What technique did you use for your beautiful mittens Lene?
Alpaca is also a wonderful natural fibre to work with for mittens and such :-)

  4. Like you I'm looking forward to Autumn and Winter though it's a bit further away then yours (well, probably only a few weeks ...). There are days I long for a woolen shawl or socks to keep me warm as there's a chill in the air, but right now it's to warm for them. In a few weeks though I'll fully enjoy them again!

I love reading your blog and seeing your creations!

It's still in the 80s F here, but the sun is at a different slant and as I read your post, I could feel the Fall coming. Thank you for writing so beautifully about those hidden blue wells.

  6. Still mid 80s (F) here in Boston, but I hear you--- I long for the nip in the air of fall, the crispness of each breath, the slowness of the light.

are you able to swim in your lake in the summer or is it far too cool? Your home area has been on my "to visit" list since I was a child of 10. Someday...

  7. We felt it here in New England this morning. I love the autumn but am not quite ready for summer to go on its way yet. Happy wool weather to you, Lene!

The shadows are a bit longer and it is dark by 8 here. I will have to reprogram all my light timers. And today it is cool. SonI am knitting with Rowan Cocoon.

  9. I welcome the cooler nights and breezy days here now. The yarn shop is building up a buzz of customers already and that's encouraging me.
I am thinking of thick soft wool and ice fishing :)

Thank you very much! I needed this. I was getting depressed about the thought of winter, again! But your perspective is much better! Thanks again!

  11. Lene, when I saw the post from you in my feed burner I shouted "Yes!" Which made the dog jump and look at me weird :0)

I love fall. I love wool. Enjoy them sweet Lene, winter will come all too soon.

I set my alarm to remind me to go and close up the chicken house every evening as it starts to get dark. For 3 months I did not have to change the time, as the sun set about the same time every day. Now is the time when I have to change it weekly or even more often. It is also the time of making jam, planting the fall carrots, planting the garlic and shallots for next year.

Just this past weekend, even though it was in the 90F (the first time this summer in this part of Oregon!), I sensed Autumn as right around the corner. Though the day was hot the air had a certain cool feel and the light at an angle which heralds Autumn. An older friend remarked on Friday that he feels the changing of the season. Summer was so wet and cool here that my garden is only now producing food.

I love Autumn and Winter. I am a cool/cold weather person. Love your pictures of what is to come. I moved my loom to the front room by the big window so I can weave and watch the snow this winter. Always love your pictures!

  17. The days between august 20th and september usually brings change here, the weather turns colder, and definetly fall like. Not this year, summer is alive and kicking with a record breaking heat weave...but it is getting dark sooner, there is dusk after 7 PM...

  18. I am a summer lover and the change to fall can be depressing for me. I don't live as far north as you, but my home in Northern Ontario, Canada, is above the Arctic Watershed and I know cooler days will descend quickly. Knitting is a comfort. I am picking out mitten patterns, checking the colors of the wool in my stash, and setting some unfinished cotton projects aside for another spring.

I've definitely already noticed the shorter days here, and we've not even had much of a summer! I love autumn though, the lovely change in colours and having even more of an excuse to knit like a maniac. I'm certainly going to start listing what I want to make for the season.

    Lenotshka,
    Ajatttelin aloittaa yksinkertaista virkkausta.

  25. Ok, wow! So this is the first time I've visited your blog and I am so thrilled and surprised to see your little Sweedish Vallhund! I've had a Val for three years now and he is the most loving, sweet, and fun dog I've ever known. Of course, no one ever knows what he is. I've heard "miniature shepherd" and "Corgi/German Shepherd mix". So it's very exciting to see another familiar furry face :)
