Wool Season again

The summer is gone and the wool-sweater months are here once again. For the last few nights the temperature has dipped below zero for a short while. In the mornings the fog has been lying on the lake. Most of the leaves are still green but here and there are few early-birds where you can spot colours changing and a few have fallen off. The moment of standing outside in the very early hour today by the lake drinking the first cup of coffee and breathing the foggy morning air felt very good. When I stepped into the warm kitchen the contrast between the warm inside and cold outside was clear and I loved the feeling of rubbing cold hands against each other to warm them up a bit. It is definately a wool season again.

Enid is a beautiful cardigan. I love the neckline especially. The pattern is written so that it starts from the hem. I discovered knitting from the neckline downwards when knitting Pivocoli and have loved the technique ever since so I’m flipping Enid the other way around as well. I started by making this lovely little detail.
I am going to make a few adjustments to the pattern, the sleeves look very narrow so I will add few stitches to them but I try not to loose the looks because these slender sleeves are one of the things that make Enid so lovely. Then I might make it a bit longer but then again I might not.

When I had the yoke with the colours done, I transferred the stitches onto three circulars and blocked it. I had to see if the knit was puckering.

This is where I’m today. From now on it is plain stockinette row after row. Kind of like that at the moment.

  1. Lene - I have determined to only make sweaters in one piece and I love the neck-down technique - knitting in a downhill coast rather than struggling uphill. And you get to do the interesting part first! Love your colorwork.

Is it really freezing temperatures already?! That's amazing to me.

You've chosen such a gorgeous palette--I REALLY like the sharp green against the other colors.

  6. This is going to be a beautiful sweater! Here in northern BC, Canada, it's getting very, very close to freezing at night, but we're not there quite yet! :0)

Your Enid is beautiful! I'm ashamed to admit that when I started reading your post yesterday I didn't realize whose blog it was at first -- I like your new look but it fooled me for a minute :)

  8. Lene - again, a project that looks better on someone's blog than it does in the magazine or book. I have knit baby sweaters from the top down, but must admit I am now anxious to try an adult sweater that way!
I agree - sometimes the stockinette part is just what I want to work on, as I dream of the next project!

  10. You are moving right along! I find it's nice to get the tricky parts down first, then just knit along; so soothing.

  11. It looks great! No puckers in sight.

There's a yoke design I'm thinking also thinking about flipping around when I make it. It think it is such a sensible plan. You'll be able to try it on as you go to get those sleeves to the prefect length.

  12. It's going to be a fabulous sweater for cooler weather. I'm also considering a Fair Isle yoked sweater. They are simply beautiful.

Your Enid is off to a beautiful start. I love that pattern and I'm looking forward to seeing yours emerge. What wonderful colors you chose!!

Thanks, too, for the beautiful prose welcoming fall. I've been dreading it, but it's coming whether I like it or not. (I think we are just a little bit behind you.)

Autumn is my favorite time of year...but still a bit into the future in central Ohio. I must try some fair isle...maybe socks to start. Your knitting is such an inspiration!

  20. Great idea starting from the top! I read that some people had had problems with the fit of the yoke; being able to try it on from the beginning is a big bonus. Love the colours, too. Maybe I should move this cardigan from my to-do-list to my doing-it-list.

  22. I was inspired by your Picovoli dress and I'm making my own variation—with Euroflax linen and 2.75mm needles! It will take awhile, but I love knitting from the top down, and lots of stockinette is soothing to my soul right now, too.

That is a lovely sweater in beautiful colours.

Drinking coffee by the lake in the early morning sounds idyllic. The beginning of autumn is so bittersweet.

  24. Enid is beautiful! I lack the confidence in my abilities to make changes to a pattern such as working opposite the way it was written.

  25. What a wonderful first paragraph. It is so evocative...I posted on it today, I hope you don't mind.

  26. I have never tried knitting a sweater in the neck down.
It seems to be faster that way.
    Why is that?
Your Enid sweater is beautiful! I love the colors.
They remind me of the colors just before Autumn starts!
