Independence Day

I'm forever thankful for our veterans for letting me raise up my children in this beautiful northern country. My daughter wanted to dress up in Finland's colors (blue and white) to go to the Independence Day reception arranged by the city of Rovaniemi for the nineth graders.
The dress is blue but she wears a white rose in her hair. Here she is in her new Casino Shawl...

checking the mirror image in her very first high heels

in the catwalk.

(In case somebody asks, I made those cats some years ago. They are of cloth with some embroidery added.)

Best wishes on your Independence Day. Your daughter looks lovely in the dress and shawl. Is that the dress that you were busy sewing last week?

Happy Independence Day. I had to take a look on google to find out when and from whom you got your independence. I love reading blogs from all over the world. I learn so much, from knitting to geography and history.

The shawl looks phenomenal on your daughter. She looks so proud and grown up.

Lene, do you know the term "gilding the lily?" It particularly applies to your beautiful, graceful, lily-like daughter wearing your elegant lace shawl.

    Nice job on both!

    And Happy Independence Day!

I hope all of your family enjoy the Independence Day celebrations. Your daughter looks very lovely, I am sure she will turn many heads. The dress and the shawl go together so well. How did you manage to match them so well? The cat walk is very amusing, haha. Lene, I cannot fully express what a pleasure it is to see so much creativity expressed in so many ways. Please thank your daughter for allowing us to enjoy her beauty and grace.

Did your heart do a little quiver when you saw your child and she was a young lady? She is beautiful and the dress and shawl are absolutely wonderful. How has the practising wearing high heels gone? It is not as easy as it looks!
Love the cats too! Are there any crafts that you cannot do, Lene? Does your host Mom from the USA who encouraged you in embroidery read your blog? She must be amazed!

  27. Happy Independence Day to you! I really enjoy your blog. The idea of living somewhere where the days are short and the homes are cozy and you have plenty of time to knit sounds so wonderful.

Your shawl and your daughter are lovely.

  28. Happy Independence Day!

We are watching "Fire and Ice" a documentary about Finland's winter war on our Public Television station. Although the reception is poor as we are in the midst of a tremendous snowstorm. Safe travels to the dance!

Do Finnish teenage girls wear boots to the party and change into their heels? Michigan girls are not always so sensible.

As an American I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea of an Independence Day in the snow. (Darned self-involved Americans.) Do Finns set off fireworks as part of their celebration?

Your daughter and the shawl are lovely!

  35. Such a wonderful day to celebrate living in freedom. Happy Independence Day!

What a beautiful daughter for you to be proud of. She looks so confident in her first high heels, lovely dress, and the gorgeous shawl from her Mum.

Your home in the photos looks so warm and beautiful. I love wood.

  36. Yes I noticed the dress as well as daughter and shawl - what a combination!

Now I have something else to add to the list of important Dec 6 events (my birthday, Saint Nicholas' feast day, inauguration of the new Congolese president...etc!)

Huivi on upea! Neuleet pääsevät todella oikeuksiinsa vasta, kun niitä pidetään.

Olen blogisi vanha lukija, mutta uusi kommentoija. On aina niin mukavaa päästä lukemaan huolella kirjoitettua tekstiä, ja katsoa kuvia kauniista neuleistasi. :)

  46. I hope it was a great day all around. :-) Are there fireworks on your Independence Day, like we have? Or do you have a more "indoor" set of traditions, since it's so cold at this time of year?

The shawl turned out beautifully--of course. :-) Your daughter looks so elegant in it!

Wow! Beautiful daughter, shawl, dress, & shoes. What a fun way to celebrate Independence Day. I just began a shawl from the Three-cornered and long shawl book that I first heard about on your site. I'm hoping it will be ready to wear by Easter (I wanted Christmas but I don't think that will happen!).
